Genetic Sabotage: How Rogue DNA Elements Cripple a Key Cancer Defence
Our own DNA contains rogue elements called 'Alu' that can sabotage the vital BRCA1 tumour suppressor gene. By causing sections of the gene to be mistakenly deleted or duplicated, these elements contribute to 10-15% of hereditary breast cancers, but new sequencing technologies are finally unmasking their complex behaviour.
