A Dash of Nickel Unlocks Exceptionally Stable Quantum Emitters

Scientists have found a simple way to stabilise tiny crystals called perovskite quantum dots, a key step towards powerful quantum communication. By adding a small amount of nickel, these dots can now emit single particles of light with over 99% purity and remain stable for extended periods under normal room conditions, overcoming a major hurdle for the technology.

The Invisible Siege: Combating Spacecraft Electrostatic Discharge with Light

Researchers have developed a compact sensor that uses light absorption to detect dangerous electrical build-up on satellites. Unlike traditional semiconductor sensors, this silicon photonic waveguide appears capable of withstanding the harsh radiation of space.

Intracellular 3D Printing: Fabricating Microstructures Inside Living Cells

Researchers have demonstrated the ability to print solid, complex microstructures inside live cells using two-photon polymerisation. This technique enables the insertion of functional components, such as tracking barcodes and microlasers, directly into the cytosol.
