In the global effort to tackle obesity, researchers are exploring novel agents from natural sources. A new study focuses on a polysaccharide from the Chinese yam, known as CYP, which has demonstrated promising anti-obesity effects in the lab.
Scientists tested the compound on cells and in an obese zebrafish model. The results were significant: CYP effectively promoted lipolysis—the natural process of breaking down fats—and markedly reduced lipid accumulation in the zebrafish.
To understand the mechanism, the team used computational modelling and experimental validation. They discovered that CYP activates a key internal communication route called the cAMP/PKA signalling pathway. By switching on this pathway, the compound helps to regulate proteins involved in fat metabolism. The findings highlight CYP's potential as a foundation for new therapeutic strategies against obesity.
