Researchers used a high-detail energy-economy model to simulate various paths to neutrality. They measured a cost-efficient reduction of 86% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. This data suggests that a simple straight line between 2030 and 2050 is insufficient; the EU may need to front-load its efforts significantly.

The 2040 Power Surge

The study identified three specific milestones necessary for the next sixteen years:

• A seven-fold increase in wind and solar power generation.
• Electricity reaching a 49% share of the total energy supply.
• Scaling carbon capture technology to handle 188 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

This shift suggests that waiting to decarbonise heavy industry or transport could make the final 2050 goal impossible. By accelerating now, the EU could organise a more stable economic transition and avoid a frantic, expensive rush at the finish line.
