Draining the full tub
Most global climate talks aim to keep global warming to 1.5°C. Yet Earth has a strict planetary boundary, a limit that keeps our world stable. Staying within that safe zone means bringing warming down to 1.0°C. It also means cutting airborne carbon to 350 ppm, or parts per million parts of air.
Think of our world as a deep bathtub. Burning coal, oil, and gas keeps the tap running. Stopping fossil fuels turns the tap off, but dirty water already fills the tub to the brim. To bring the water down to a safe line, we must open the drain. That is what carbon dioxide removal does by drawing gas back out of the sky.
The price of cooling down
Researchers mapped out global power systems up to the year 2100. They tested plans that phase out fossil fuels while running big air-cleaning tools. These tools use direct air capture to pull gas straight from ambient air. Then comes carbon sequestration, which locks that trapped carbon safely underground so it cannot escape.
Running this clean-up alongside cheap sun and wind power takes under 5% more total primary power than aiming for 1.5°C. Even better, total annual power and factory bills fall steeply as we switch away from fossil fuels. Those costs drop from 6% of global gross domestic product (GDP) today down to just 1.5%. Pushing past 1.5°C to hit the safer 1.0°C line requires only up to 0.25% of global GDP in extra spend.
What we still do not know
The math shows that returning Earth to a safe radiative forcing of about +1 W m^-2 is fully within our budget. This metric tracks the heat trapped between sunlight arriving and heat leaving Earth. However, the models assume humanity can quickly set up cheap green power in every region. We still do not know how fast builders can manufacture giant air filters in the real world, or which specific mix of filter tools works best on the ground.
