What happens when top chatbots drop their polite corporate smile?
Stripping polite corporate filters from leading artificial intelligence models makes their predictions far more fatalistic. Surprisingly, humans strongly agree with these dark visions once they read them.

Lifting the polite mask
What happens when you strip the cheerful corporate filter off the world's most advanced chatbots? Normally, models use reinforcement learning from human feedback, a safety training method that keeps responses polite and measured. But when investigators bypassed this shield using a persona-steering protocol, the tone shifted abruptly.
The study tested five major models active during the 2024 to 2025 period, including GPT-4o, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Grok 3. Without their standard guardrails, the machines abandoned their sunny optimism. Instead, their AI future predictions grouped into urgent, aggressive, and fatalistic storylines.
Comparing blank pages to dark stories
At the same time, the team questioned ten people about a post-singularity world, the hypothetical era when machine intellect eclipses our own. When thinking on their own, people used completely different vocabulary from the chatbots. Their unprompted ideas had very little overlap with the machine outputs.
However, when shown the collated machine scenarios later, the participants strongly agreed with the AI's dark outlook. Think of a corporate spokesperson who drops their polished PR smile in private to deliver a stark, urgent briefing; you might not have written their bleak speech, but you quickly find yourself nodding along.
What we still don't know
This quick agreement highlights real societal hazards, including control risks, liability challenges, and disinformation. The main worry is the erosion of cognitive sovereignty, our ability to retain independent judgment without adopting persuasive machine scripts. The study notes structural friction between expanding technical power and public risk perception.
Yet these results come with clear caveats. This work is a preprint that has not yet undergone peer review. It relied on five specific models and a purposive group of ten people. We still do not know how to protect human cognitive sovereignty against persuasive machine narratives, or how to resolve the friction between technical growth and public fear.
