The team used computer modelling to project these health trends up to the year 2040. They found that the overall rates in India might actually start to drop over the next two decades. In China, however, the total number of people living with MS is expected to keep rising.
At first glance, this sounds like bad news for China. Yet, it could actually point to a medical success. If doctors get better at spotting a disease, then the official numbers will naturally go up. Furthermore, if medical treatments improve, patients live much longer. A rising prevalence in China likely means that people are surviving longer with the condition, rather than dying early.
Both nations still face a heavy challenge. The data shows that the condition heavily affects young and middle-aged adults, particularly women. By tracking these numbers, health officials can plan better care programmes.
