A silent crisis builds in the atmosphere under the cover of daily life. The steady accumulation of greenhouse gases causes climate change, an emergency that began with a whisper. For decades, society felt perfectly fine. We went to work, played with our children, and lived a normal life. Yet, deep inside the biosphere, the damage was busy multiplying. As researchers sought solutions, they turned to the ocean, hoping to find natural defences. They looked for hidden compartments in marine ecosystems, hoping coastal habitats formed tiny nests where carbon could be locked away unseen. The stakes of climate mitigation are terrifyingly high. When rising temperatures finally strike, they cause severe ecological collapse. The theoretical discovery of these hidden compartments in underwater forests was a massive beacon of hope to biologists. It explained how the planet might heal itself. To harness it, however, scientists needed a new kind of hero: a precise tracking tool that could measure exactly where the carbon was hiding and how long it had been there.
