Imagine a massive computer network. Data flows through thick fibre-optic cables, connecting giant servers to thousands of smaller desktop terminals. Every piece of hardware has a specific job. If you suddenly unplug the single biggest server in the building, you might expect the whole network to crash instantly. The screens go black. The system fails completely. But what if the network is designed to be smart? If you remove the main server, then the smaller terminals simply reroute the data. They build new connections with each other. They take on extra processing tasks. The system does not break. Instead, it adapts and keeps the data flowing. This is exactly how scientists now think about the ancient ocean's food web. Around 2.6 million years ago, the marine world faced a massive crisis at the end of the Pliocene epoch. One third of all large marine animals vanished forever. This massive die-off included the most famous giant shark of all time.
