To make these items, factories use a process that heats and squishes plastic. It is a bit like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube. For a long time, we thought this squishing and melting was perfectly safe. But a new study suggests otherwise.

The Hidden Source of Micro and nanoplastics

Scientists usually think that micro and nanoplastics form when rubbish breaks down in the sun or waves. However, researchers recently tested what happens during the manufacturing and recycling process itself. They looked at six common types of plastic. These include the materials used to make yoghurt pots, water bottles, and even clothes. By combining laboratory experiments with computer modelling, the team measured something surprising. The normal heating and squishing process actually creates lots of micro and nanoplastics right from the start. This happens even under standard factory conditions. It suggests that making and recycling plastic might accidentally create pollution before the product even leaves the factory.

How It Works: The Crumbly Biscuit Effect

Why does melting plastic create tiny fragments? To understand this, we have to look closely at the molecules. Plastics are made of long chains of molecules called polymers. When factories heat and push these plastics, the stress breaks some of the long chains into shorter, damaged pieces. Think of a solid plastic item as a strong brick wall. Now, imagine replacing some of those strong bricks with crumbly biscuits. The biscuits do not stick well to the bricks. In the plastic, the short, damaged chains do not mix with the long, healthy chains. They clump together in little pockets. Because they do not stick together properly, these pockets create weak spots. When the plastic cools down and hardens, these weak spots become brittle. In some plastics, the cooling process actually pushes the short, damaged chains right to the surface. Just like a wall made with crumbly biscuits, the surface easily flakes off. This flaking releases tiny plastic particles into the air and water.

What This Means for Our Planet

This research shows us that plastic pollution is not just about littering. The very way we shape and recycle plastics might be a built-in source of the problem. If manufacturing creates micro and nanoplastics, we cannot just rely on recycling to fix our waste issues. So, what is the next step? The researchers suggest that engineers need to find new ways to melt plastic. We must stop the polymer chains from breaking apart in the first place. If we can protect the chains from snapping when they get hot, we could stop these tiny particles from forming.
