Human activities, particularly the release of synthetic dyes, contribute significantly to water pollution. To combat this, scientists have developed an innovative solution: a simple cotton fabric transformed into a powerful, eco-friendly filter.

The fabric is first coated with chitosan, a natural substance, to enhance its surface properties. It is then infused with silver nanoparticles, creating what is known as a heterogeneous nano-catalyst – a solid material that speeds up chemical reactions without being consumed. When tested on water contaminated with Congo red, a model dye pollutant, this smart fabric demonstrated impressive performance, successfully breaking down approximately 90% of the toxic dye within just 20 minutes.

Furthermore, the material proves to be robust. It was reused for three cycles and still maintained about 77% of its initial efficiency, signalling its strong potential for developing sustainable wastewater treatment technologies.
