Aqueous hydrogen batteries offer a highly reliable way to store power for large electrical grids. They last a long time. They are safe. However, they have historically been too expensive for widespread use. The main problem lies in the hydrogen electrode. This is a part of the battery that usually relies on costly platinum to work properly. Platinum is rare and expensive, making large batteries financially impossible for many regions. Recently, researchers built a new type of electrode that changes the maths. They swapped out the expensive platinum for a cheaper nickel-based catalyst. They integrated this nickel into an ultrathin, water-repellent membrane. The team measured the cost of this new integrated hydrogen electrode at just $3.60 per square metre. That is roughly five per cent of the cost of older designs.

Powering Future Grids

The initial bench-scale results are highly encouraging. The researchers measured the battery's performance and found it ran stably for over 3,300 hours. It kept about 98 per cent of its capacity. The overall energy cost dropped to just one-sixth of previous models. What does this mean for the future of our infrastructure? Cheap, grid-scale energy storage could allow us to build advanced, resilient energy networks anywhere. If we can power massive urban centres using affordable stored energy, we could accelerate sustainability programmes for generations to come.
