Why photonic computing struggles to create

Creation requires flexibility. To solve this, the team integrated millions of photonic neurons directly onto the chip. They utilised what they call an 'optical latent space' to manage the changing dimensions of the network without the usual bottlenecks. In the laboratory, this architecture allowed LightGen to perform tasks previously reserved for silicon heavyweights: high-resolution image generation, denoising, and even 3D manipulation.

The metrics are startling. The team measured end-to-end computing speeds and energy efficiency at levels more than two orders of magnitude greater than state-of-the-art electronic chips. Where a standard GPU might sweat to render a scene, this optical setup breezes through it.

We must remain grounded, however. A successful prototype is distinct from a mass-produced component ready for a data centre. Yet, the data suggests that the bottleneck for AI might not be the algorithm, but the electron itself.
