For decades, treating complex tumours has felt like fighting in the dark. Progress against certain cancers has often stalled. Millions of people suffer from conditions driven by hidden genetic mutations. We simply do not have enough targeted medicines, and developing new ones takes far too long. The main problem? We do not fully understand the vast, uncharted genetic wiring of these diseases. Finding the exact non-coding regions that keep a tumour alive is incredibly difficult. However, a recent breakthrough offers a glimpse into how we might solve this problem. Scientists recently tested a powerful new tool that could change the trajectory of genomic medicine. They wanted to map enhancer-gene associations in colorectal cancer. Enhancers are tiny pieces of DNA that act like remote controls. They turn specific genes on or off from a distance. Finding which remote controls which gene is a massive challenge in biology.
