Have you ever wondered how your parents' morning cup of coffee actually grows? It all starts with tiny plant cells that eventually form a whole bush. But growing strong, healthy coffee plants is not always easy. Changing weather patterns and nasty plant diseases constantly threaten coffee crops around the globe. To help protect our favourite bean, scientists are looking closely at the plant's biological instruction manual: its DNA. Recently, researchers achieved a massive success in coffee genome editing. They tested a clever way to tweak a coffee plant's genes without leaving any foreign DNA behind. This might eventually help farmers grow tougher plants that can survive harsh conditions.
