How Algae Act as Detectives in Himalayan Freshwater Ecosystems

Have you ever wondered if a river could take a health test? Imagine if the water itself could speak up and tell us exactly how it feels.
In many ways, it can! All over the world, freshwater ecosystems are facing big challenges from human activities. Things like farming, building, and waste can make the water cloudy and dirty. These rivers provide drinking water and homes for wildlife, so keeping them clean is incredibly important. But how do scientists know exactly where a river is sick and where it is healthy?
To find out, a team of researchers travelled to the Kosi watershed in the beautiful Himalayan mountains. They wanted to measure the health of the river by looking at some of its smallest and most colourful residents: algae.
How Algae Protect Freshwater Ecosystems
The scientists collected 33 samples of water and algae from three different spots along the river during the summer. They measured the Water Quality Index (WQI). You can think of the WQI as a school report card for the water.
At the top of the river, high up and far away from big towns, the water scored an "excellent" grade. It was clear and cool. But as the river flowed down into lower areas with more human activity, the score dropped to "very poor".
This is where the algae come in. The researchers noticed a clear and fascinating pattern in how the microscopic plant life behaved.
How It Works: The Algae Warning System
Think of algae like fussy eaters at a restaurant. Some types of algae, like Oedogonium and Spirogyra, are like strict health food fans. They only thrive in clean, clear, and stable water. When the river is healthy, these algae are everywhere.
However, other types of algae, such as Spirulina and Oscillatoria, are like junk food lovers. They do not mind cloudy water or extra nutrients from human pollution. In fact, they love it!
While these specific patterns were observed during a summer study of the Kosi river, they show how looking at which algae are living in a spot can help scientists tell if the water is polluted. The presence of the "junk food" algae acts as a natural alarm system. The study measured high levels of cloudiness (known as turbidity) and changes in pH at the polluted sites. These chemical and physical measurements exactly matched the areas where the tough, pollution-loving algae lived.
What This Means for Our Rivers
This rapid ecological assessment is incredibly useful for conservation. Alongside comprehensive chemical tests, checking the local algae helps scientists quickly spot pollution hotspots and understand how the ecosystem is responding.
The findings suggest that we could use nature-based solutions to clean up these dirty spots and restore the water quality. Protecting our rivers starts with understanding them. Sometimes, the smallest green algae have the biggest stories to tell about the health of our planet.
