Osteoarthritis, a widespread degenerative joint disease, causes significant pain and disability for millions. While surgery is one option, researchers are exploring less invasive treatments. One such technique is acupotomy, a procedure that offers a minimally invasive alternative to tackle joint-related issues.
A major new analysis has pooled data from 31 randomised controlled trials, encompassing 3,323 patients, to assess its effectiveness when combined with oral medicines. This 'network meta-analysis' rigorously compared different treatment combinations to find the most effective strategies.
The results were clear: combination therapies consistently outperformed other interventions. The research suggests a tailored approach is best. For tackling acute symptoms, pairing acupotomy with conventional drugs could be prioritised. However, for more promising long-term functional recovery, the combination of acupotomy with herbal medicine was found to consistently rank among the most effective options.
