Healthcare systems are facing a looming crisis: global cancer cases are projected to hit 35 million by 2050. The field has evolved towards precision medicine, where treatments are personalised based on 'multiomics'—comprehensive biological datasets combining genetics, metabolism, and other molecular profiles. However, the contextual analysis of such voluminous and diverse data is now effectively beyond human cognitive capacity.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping in to reshape this landscape. By mining complex data in real time, AI provides novel insights that human analysis might miss. Methods for risk prediction, diagnosis, and therapeutics have already been developed and approved, signalling their readiness for clinical workflows. However, experts caution that these models must be validated using real-world data representing diverse populations to address ethical, legal, and trust issues. The ultimate goal is not to replace doctors, but to integrate AI tools that augment clinical decision-making, ensuring that the autonomy of medical professionals and patient safety remain paramount as demand escalates.
