In the high-pressure environment of an emergency department, artificial intelligence is emerging as a powerful tool to support doctors and nurses. A comprehensive ‘umbrella review’ has synthesised the findings from 24 previous studies to create a big-picture analysis of AI's role in managing emergency patients.
The research confirms that AI technologies, such as machine learning and deep learning, are having a significant impact in four key areas. These include improving triage to prioritise the most critical patients, providing diagnostic support, assisting with clinical decision-making, and optimising the overall workflow of the department for better patient flow.
However, the path to widespread adoption is not clear. The review consistently highlighted major barriers, including issues with getting different digital systems to work together, a lack of 'explainability' in how AI reaches its conclusions, data privacy concerns, and legal ambiguities. The authors conclude that while AI’s potential is transformative, future systems must be transparent and validated to ensure responsible implementation.
